GREENS TAKE UP THE PEN TO HELP SAVE THE COAST [top]

Three of the 6 Pacific coast salmon species (Sockeye, Chum, Pink) are already extinct from California coastal waters and rivers, and with the other 3 species (Chinook, Coho, Steelhead) severely depleted and endangered, and many other marine life species grossly impacted by pollution and over-exploitation, Sonoma County Greens helped collect 2,000 letters from Sonoma county residents in July, for the Russian River Keeper's letter-writing campaign. The Russian River Keepers will soon deliver the letters to local state legislators and to the California Fish & Game Commission.

Overall, a total of 4,000 letters are to be sent to : District 1 (Sebastopol to Oregon border) State Assemblyman - Democrat, Wes Chesbro; District 2 (Napa/Sonoma to Oregon border) State Senator - Democrat, Pat Wiggins; and the State Fish & Game Commission in Sacramento, urging them to adopt the IPA, North Central Coast, Marine Protection Plan.

This plan is supported and endorsed, not only by the Russian River Keepers and many Greens, but also, by the Sierra Club, the Audubon Society, the California Academy of Sciences, Defenders of Wildlife, Stewards of the Redwoods and Coast, and other local conservation groups.

The State's decision on this important fish, marine life and coastal protection plan is due sometime in August.

Thank you to you all for your help and efforts in this matter.

THREE WAYS TO BECOME ACTIVE IN YOUR LOCAL GREEN PARTY [top]

If you have been wondering what you can do to help strengthen the Green Party in Sonoma County (GPSC), here are some suggestions:

  • Help table for the GPSC at the Wednesday Night Market in Santa Rosa between 5 - 8 PM
  • Help the GPSC host the Green Party of California's Fall General Assembly in Cotati (see item #3 below)
  • Attend any of our monthly GPSC General Business Meetings (see calendar below)

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR THE GP GENERAL ASSEMBLY [top]

The Green Party of Sonoma County (GPSC) will be hosting the Green Party of California's Fall General Assembly (GA) this October 10th and 11th at the Cotati Veterans Memorial Hall. The GPSC coordinators (including the County Council) are organizing this event, but additional volunteers are needed to assist with the planning and to help out during the weekend of the General Assembly. If you'd like to support the party, please contact Tim Morgan at blkcloud_at_sonic.net and express your desire to help. We need:

Pre-Event Volunteers

  • Greens to work on a food committee - Steve Devereux is investigating this now.
  • Greens to work on a logistics committee (this includes travel and lodging research) - Halley DeCarion is working on this now.
  • Greens to assist with event planning (as in entertainment etc.) - Tim Morgan is the point person on this.
  • We also need Greens within a rough radius of Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Petaluma, and Cotati-Rohnert Park to step up and help provide home stays for GPCA Greens traveling other parts of the state.

Volunteers During the Event

We will need help with food preparation and service, registration, setup and clean up on both days, and possibly some event participants or speakers for the Saturday evening program.

So please help make this event a success and volunteer to support your party.

Tim Morgan
