NEXT GPSC GENERAL MEETING - CHANGE OF LOCATION [top]

The February meeting of the GPSC will be held at 5513 Sebastopol Highway 12.
We are exploring a new meeting location due to the impending change in the location for the Environmental Center in late spring of this year. We will put out a reminder message on this before the meeting. See you there on February 16 at 7 PM. If you have any questions, please call Tim Morgan at 707-695-9293.

  GPSC COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION [top]

All local registered Greens should consider running for a seat on the GPSC county council! The current seven seats expire with the June 6th primary election. In order for the Green Party of Sonoma County to appear on the ballot, the election must be contested with eight or more candidates fulfilling the filing requirements. At our January 19th meeting, five incumbents declared that they will run for another term: Jared Laiti, Suzanne Reta, Matt Rogina, Bill Patterson and Tim Morgan.

While the role of the county council is administrative, it is also charged with empowering the GPSC as a whole. By becoming a Council Member, you will be contributing to the worthwhile effort of building a viable, effective counterforce to the current corrupted two-party system; and you will be associating with like-minded activists in their dedication to the total transformation of the current culture of unsustainable waste.

To file your candidacy, you must have been a registered Green for not less than three months immediately prior to filing and must not have been registered with any other party within twelve months immediately prior to filing. Declaration of Candidacy papers need to be filed with the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters (ROV) between February 13 and March 10. You will then be required to gather 30 signatures on a nomination paper (not a difficult task....we will help) and file the nomination paper with the ROV by March 10. Once elected, council members are required to regularly attend the GPSC business meetings which are held every third Thursday night of the month.

If you are interested in becoming a candidate, please contact Bill Patterson of the local Campaigns and Candidates Working Group at 838-3079 or billpatterson@earthlink.net. You may also contact Tim Morgan at 707-695-9293 or any of the current county councilors at gpsc-cc@sonomagreenparty.org.

CAMPAIGN TO RAISE STATE MINIMUM WAGE & INDEX IT TO INFLATION [top]

Greens,

Social justice is one of our party's 10 key values, and Greens have taken a lead role in organizing for higher wages for California workers. We should especially thank local Green Tim Smith who has spent years championing this cause within the state party. I am pleased to inform you of this effort, and urge you to join us and the state's lowest paid workers in struggle for better wages. This is also an excellent opportunity for us to let the public see Green values in action and register new members.

Californians for Fair Wages, a statewide coalition of Green and progressive activists, has come together to campaign for a higher statewide minimum wage, indexed yearly to inflation to keep up with cost of living increases. There are two versions of this initiative; one raises the minimum hourly wage to $7.75 over one year, with yearly adjustments for inflation thereafter. The other version raises the minimum hourly wage to $8.75 over two years, with yearly adjustments for inflation thereafter. By working to qualify both of these initiatives for the ballot, we preserve all of our options for winning something tangible for workers this November.

We now have petitions ready to circulate -- anyone eligible to register to vote in California may circulate these petitions. If you are interested in helping us gather the hundreds of thousands of signatures needed to bring millions of Californians closer to a living wage, or finding out more about what is involved, please contact us immediately. People are going to be eager to sign this petition, so the key is having enough volunteers to reach out to the overwhelmingly supportive public. You may contact myself, Jared Laiti, at 707-792-2381 or JaredL@sbcglobal.net regarding both initiatives, Tim Smith at 707-206-0260 or Rioryon@aol.com regarding the $7.75 initiative, and Cres Vellucci civillib@cwnet.com and Pat Driscoll pat@sonicfrog.com regarding the $8.75 initiative. If you can't gather signatures yourself (or even if you can!), please consider making a financial contribution to our efforts -- http://www.cafairwage.org/pages/contribute.html.

Together we can make a difference for California's workers!
